Stand-up comedian and compere, dark humour with a dapper edge

Anthony J Brown - stand-up comedian and compere, dressed in a fedora and pinstripe suit

Anthony J Brown is a stand-up comedian and compere who has built a distinctive reputation on the UK club circuit for doing things differently. Where most acts chase quick laughs with rapid-fire one-liners, Anthony deals in longer, carefully constructed four, five, six and seven-line jokes, thick with imagery and comic misdirection, delivered without a scrap of profanity. Dressed in bespoke, funeral-director-dapper attire and armed with a famously deadpan stare, he holds a room through stillness and timing rather than volume and pace, and he comperes regularly at clubs up and down the country.

His slow-burn, dryly cynical style has earned him a Jongleurs/Metro "Stand & Deliver" Comedy Award and runner-up honours at the BBC New Comedy Award, alongside a run as tour support for Alan Carr. On screen and radio he has featured on Channel 4's Phoenix Nights, ITV's Attitude and BBC7's Spanking New, and has been a contributor to Radio 2's Arthur Smith's comedy output. He remains a regular headline and compering booking for clubs including Hot Water Comedy Club and Just the Tonic, where reviewers have repeatedly singled out his unhurried, almost hypnotic delivery as the standout element of his act.

For promoters and event organisers, Anthony brings a genuinely different flavour to a comedy night: sharp, controlled and quietly compelling rather than loud or frantic. His clean material and steady compering hand make him a dependable choice for club nights, corporate functions and after-dinner bills alike, and his unmistakable stage presence means audiences remember exactly who he was long after the lights come back up.
